What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are a chronic disease caused by high blood pressure in internal or external vascular structures around anus. They are manifested by congestion or swollen veins inside the rectum or under the skin around the anus. Hemorrhoids are a common condition and at least half of people over the age of 50 have some problem with them.

Hemorrhoids also frequently affect younger population, especially pregnant women and children who have problem with defecating.

A number of factors are believed to be involved, and some of them are:
• Age
• Diet
• Obesity
• High blood pressure
• Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids are classified into four grades based on the degree of prolapse:
1. Grade I: No prolapse, just prominent blood vessels 

2.  Grade II: Prolapse upon bearing down, but spontaneous reduction 

3. Grade III: Prolapse upon bearing down requiring manual reduction

4. Grade IV: Constant prolapse with inability to be manually reduced. These often become thrombosed or twist

Symptoms include pain, occasional bleeding, anal itching and spotting the underwear. In the grade IV the symptoms are most severe. Due to the contact between rectal mucosa and skin around the anus, the prolapse is positioned outside the anal canal and temporarily in part or completely closes the muscle part of the anal canal.
